National farm insurance

The 2015 proposal

A national farm insurance scheme — automatic on registration, with crop health monitored online and compensation set by satellite with minimal human intervention.

Where it stands in 2026

Realised as PMFBY (2016), now reinforced by technology that attacks its oldest weakness — slow, disputed claims. YES-TECH estimates yields by remote sensing and CROPIC collects geo-tagged crop photographs from the field; together they cover over half the insured area and have cut claim timelines from 6–12 months to 2–3 where the technology is enabled. The shift is from an assessor walking a field months later to a satellite and a timestamped photo settling the claim while the loss is still fresh.

The open gap

Manual crop-cutting experiments still drive final settlement in many districts.

How to sustain & deepen it

Phase out manual crop-cutting experiments wherever YES-TECH and CROPIC are proven, and settle claims on the technology-estimated yield within a fixed, guaranteed window, so a farmer knows when the money will arrive. Publish the estimation basis openly — the index, the imagery, the cut-off — so fast remote settlement is trusted rather than suspected, the way index insurance only works when farmers can see how it was calculated. Extend cover and quick settlement to the tenant and the perishable grower, and the safety net finally reaches the farmers who need it most. The technology removes the dispute; transparency earns the trust.
